Online Chess 2020-21
When over-the-board play was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic, the club set up a Limerick Chess Club team on lichess.org so that members could keep playing each other. The Lichess Limerick Club Captain was Ray O’Brien. In keeping with being a virtual club, trophies and prizes were virtual. At the time the page was written the club had 39 members online.
Limerick Chess Club Online, 2020
The online club began on Sunday 5 April 2020 and ran until the end of the over-the-board suspension. Members played classical or blitz games against each other, and Cork Chess Club had set up a similar virtual club and expressed interest in inter-club matches.

Limerick Online Championship 2021
The Limerick Online Championship 2021 was run as a substitute for the usual Club Championship, under similar rules to the over-the-board competition.
- A seven-round Swiss, with one round played per week starting on Thursday 21 January 2021. The draw for each round was published on the club website.
- All games were played on lichess.org at a time agreed by both players. If an opponent did not log in within fifteen minutes of the agreed time, a walkover could be claimed.
- Time limit: 75 minutes plus 15 seconds per move; juniors under 18 could request one hour plus 15 seconds per move.
- Entry was restricted to members who would normally be eligible for the Club Championship. Games were rated automatically by lichess, not by the ICU.
- 22 players entered.
