John Cassidy stated that he had viewed the premises and parking is adequate. This possibility will be further investigated and all present agreed that the club needs a quieter venue to concentrate.
- 2) Tom White Cup – after a discussion among all present, it was agreed to change the format to a 6-round Swiss Open for all paid-up members instead of in Over and Under 1200 sections as in past years.
- 3) The 2012 Limerick Open to be held October 27-29th. John Cassidy agreed to try and organise it again this year with help from either Ray O’Brien or Ted Jennings as Controller. John would request financial assistance from the club as needed for prize money and cost of hiring a venue. The possible venues were also discussed, such as the South Court hotel or the Absolute hotel, but the South Court hotel has better parking facilities.

Motions

After a discussion, it was agreed to have it: (a) open to all members; (b) Rapid (30 min each) league format; (c) with a time handicap for players rated 300 points below their opponent. The time handicap amount was to be discussed and fixed later by the club committee.
- 2) To move weekly club meetings from the Clarion hotel to the Shannon Boat Club, proposed by John Cassidy and seconded by Phillip Foenander. There was an interesting lively debate on the advantages and disadvantages of the Clarion hotel venue, such as annual hire cost (see 2010 Treasurer report). Alternative cheaper venues such as the Shannon Boat Club, Catholic Institute and even an offer from the Milk Market were discussed. Two committee members had visited the Catholic Institute on Friday 3rd Sept to view the facilities. Tables and seating were unsuitable. And on Friday 10th Sept two committee members had visited the Shannon Boat Club and discussed an offer from the manager which would save the club rental costs and allow lowering of club subscription, which some club members feel is too high. A vote was finally taken which went narrowly 5-4 in favour of moving, with 4 abstentions. This was not an absolute majority. It was decided to refer back to the Catholic Institute and discuss with the proprietor about upgrading the tables and chairs available, which would allow Wednesday night meetings. This matter would be resolved within 10 days.

The PRO officer and A team captain then read out his report and recommendations.
The Secretary then called for motions to be discussed by members present.
Motions
- 1) There was a debate on the advantages of the present club venue, such as hire cost, parking facilities and other factors being discussed. Alternative cheaper venues such as the Shannon Boat Club and the Absolute hotel were approached by the club PRO in August with no final conclusion. Although a vote was not taken, most members expressed a wish to remain at the popular Clarion Suites hotel, which will remain as our club venue for the time being
- 2) Another motion discussed was whether we should field one team or two in the Munster League to cut expenditure. It was agreed to defer this decision to see if club membership reaches a sufficient figure in the coming weeks
- 3) There was a discussion on unpaid fees by some members as reported by the Treasurer. John Alfred suggested a membership officer to collect fees although our constitution states that it is the duty of the Treasurer to collect subscriptions, as pointed out by the Chairman. Members are not eligible to participate in club competitions unless they are fully paid-up
- 4) Members then decided on a motion to abolish the Tom White O-1200 club tournament which was not completed in the last two seasons. The Tom White Cup U-1200 competition will continue to be run.
- 5) John Alfred raised some interesting points about encouraging beginners to join and absence of female members. Our club policy is that all are welcome to join and our new PRO has agreed to try a news advertisement in the Limerick Leader
- 6) John Alfred also proposed that LCC run a Weekend tournament. There were a few venues proposed and costs mentioned but no agreement was finalised.
Finally the nomination and election of Club officers was carried with the following officers voted in:
Chairman – Michael Meaney re-elected
Secretary – Phillip Foenander re-elected
Membership Secretary – John Cassidy (replaces Stephen Cowpar)
PRO officer – Gabriel Mirza (replaces John Alfred)

All assistance will be given to them from other members to help run the club’s activities this season.
The meeting was then closed by our Chairman.

Philip Hogarty, Chairperson of the Irish Chess Union, died in Tallaght, Dublin, on 1 January 2008. A very active chess player in Dublin, where he played at the Rathmines Club, he had also taken part in the Limerick Open held in October 2007 and played for Ennis A in the Munster Chess League match against Limerick A on 2 December 2007 in Ennis. He was greatly missed by the chess fraternity.
A tribute from Jamie Flynn, organiser of the Limerick Open:
Philip Hogarty’s tragic death on the 1st of January 2008 was a very sad loss. I was a good friend with Phil and we shared many happy memories.
Phil was easily one of the best people I ever met. Of all the people I have met and encountered in the chess world, Phil would easily sit atop the list of people I most respected and admired.
His genuine willingness to try to improve chess in Ireland was unprecedented. It is such a pity that his second term as ICU Chairperson was cut so short. We had many discussions about chess, things ranging from the rating system, to junior chess, to the Irish Championships.
Many of you may know me as the Limerick Open organiser for the past three years. Every year Phil came and helped us out. We discussed how to make the tournament better, how to attract more players, and how to improve the overall tournament. I think a lot of credit is due to Phil for the help he gave us. He didn’t have any personal gain from it; he just genuinely wanted to help create a great tournament. He was completely selfless and this is something I admired greatly.
It was the second day of the Limerick Open 2007 and Phil was in the middle of his third round game. Phil came up to me and said that he was still to pay his entry fee. Phil handed me €100 as his entry fee. I went to give him change and he refused to take it. “Keep it,” he said, “I want to support ye”. After coming from Dublin to play in the tournament, showing up a day early to help us organise, paying his own entry fee, securing funds from the ICU to give us, and putting his own time and energy into helping us with no possible reward for himself, he then went even further and gave us money out of his own pocket to help run a great tournament.
I would also like to take this opportunity to say that we will be running the Limerick Open as a memorial to Phil. It is hardly a consolation given what has happened, but I feel it is the least we can do.
My condolences go to Phil’s family and loved ones, and I hope that his parents know that they raised one of the most outstanding people I have ever met in my life. This is for you Phil, we love you and you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Philip Hogarty. — Jamie Flynn

Jim Hussey, born in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick, and a long-time member of the Ennis Chess Club, who played a big role in training many of the top Ennis players when they were starting out, such as John Cassidy and Rory Quinn, died in Ennis in May 2007.
He coached a team (Kieran O’Brien, John Cassidy, Ciaran Hussey, Terry McVeigh, Paul McVeigh, Barry O’Keefe, Jimmy Frawley, Declan Fitzpatrick, Aidan Coll and Adrian Fennell) which was the only Irish team to win the British Schools Chess Championship, in 1987. The Ennis team also won gold medals five years in a row at Mosney in the Under-16 All-Ireland Chess Championship under Jim’s coaching.
